情态动词表示推测
① — Whose book is this? 这是谁的书?
— Itmustbe Mary's. 它一定是玛丽的。
②I attended a concert yesterday so itmightstill be in the music hall. 昨天我参加了一个音乐会,所以它(书包)可能还在音乐大厅里。

英语中,情态动词can/could,may/might,must等都可以表示推测。
1. can和could
(1)can表示推测时,常用于疑问句或否定句中;can't意为 “不可能”,表示否定推测时,语气最强。
●Itcan'tbe Mr. Lee. He has gone to Nanjing already. 不可能是李先生。他已经去了南京。
(2)could表示推测时,可以用于否定句中,也可以用在肯定句中表示可能性不大的推测,意思相当于may/might。
●Itcouldbe true. But I still doubt it. 这可能是真的。但是我依旧怀疑它。
2. may/might 表示一种可能性很小的推测,多用在肯定句或否定句中, might用在疑问句中表示 “可能” 时;语气最弱。
●Our English teachermaybe correcting our exercises in her office. 我们的英语老师可能正在办公室批改我们的作业。
3. must表示推测时,通常只用于肯定句,意为 “一定;肯定”,语气最强。
●Your sistermustbe a doctor,isn't she? 你的姐姐一定是位医生,不是吗?
4. will/would表示推测时,意为 “可能;大概”,可以用于推测现在和过去的情况, would的语气比will弱。
●A man of good sensewouldnot laugh in such a case. 在这种情况下,品味好的人大概不会笑。
5. should表示推测时,意为 “应该”,语气较肯定。
●It's nearly seven o'clock. Jackshouldbe here at any moment. 快七点了。杰克现在应该随时能赶到这里。
